Is a gateway to many activities, beautiful beeches, the Barrier Reef, inland rivers, getting to the Atherton Tablelands and the Daintree Rainforest is so easy from Cairns, so you could make it your base. Many attractions are just minutes away. There is also the shopping opportunities, restaurants and so so much more.
Another surprise is how close and accessible everything is in Cairns . The airport is only a few minutes drive from the city centre and visiting cruise liners and yachts moor at a marina and wharves only a block away from the main centre.
We spent two days in Cairns exploring. There is so much that you can do and as they say you can get to almost anywhere from Cairns so it is an ideal base. We stayed at the Cairns Resort by Outrigger booked through Flight Centre in Cairns
Have a walk around the Marina and admire the wonderful array of Yachts and cruise ships. Have lunch or dinner at the Esplanade. In the evening take a stroll along the esplanade and wait for the green parrots, or, in the daytime take a dip in the seawater lagoon pool. So much to see and do.

Great Barrier Reef, rainforest, outback and Cape York Peninsula . Most of the tours will pick you up from your hotel and deliver you back. The Scenic Railway leaves from Cairns and winds its way up to Kuranda, not to be missed.
You have the shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, cafes and nightclubs and the night markets on Cairns Esplanade.
The dining is cosmopolitan – Italian, Greek, Asian all mixed together with Australian cuisine, truly special.
As to entertainment you have theatres, galleries, nightclubs and the glass-domed Reef Hotel Casino with something a little different, Cairns Wildlife Dome – the rainforest right in the heart of a city under the glass dome of The Reef Casino full of animals, reptiles, koalas, turtles and wonderful colourful birdlife.
There is loads of accommodation to suit any ones pockets from backpackers to those that like their luxury.

You have a huge choice of trips, we did the Cairns Habitiat Cruise out on the Trinity Inlet which included the Crocodile Farm where the crocs are nurtured until they are big enough to be made into a handbag by Gucci or Hermes, it was something to see and wonder. You can go snorkelling or scuba diving on the reef from Cairns , go on a small cruise anything is possible.
I hope I have wetted your appetite and if you go to the links page you will find websites that I used for research before we went.
