



Things to Do
Porlamar
Is the main commercial city on the island. Most of the shops, restaurants can be found on the two major avenues, Santiago Marino and 4 de Mayo. On the outskirts of the town is the flea market with hundreds of stands.
La Asuncion
Capital of the Island . The second oldest Cathedral in Venezuela is here. Visit Santa Rosa fortress overlooking the valley, it has sensational views.
Juan Griego
The best place to be to see the sunset from the La Galera fortress.
El Valle
The religious Capital of Eastern Venezuela. Pilgrims come to the Virgen del Valle sanctuary to see the statue of Virgen del Valle.
La Restinga
Between the Macanoa Peninsula and the east part of the island is a National Park of about 26,000 acres and 25km of beach. Take a boat ride through the mangroves in a typical wooden boat called penero.
Macanao
The Macanao Peninsula is arid and the most remote beaches are here. A jeep is the best transport here.
Coche Island
A small fisherman's island with calm water and white sandy beaches.
Beaches
El Agua Beach on the north eastern coast, 15 miles from Porlamar. It has fine sand, palm trees and restaurants. Favourite of locals and visitors due to its beauty.
El Yaque Beach is famous for windsurfing. The beach is also ideal for children as the waters are warm and shallow.
Parguito Beach close to El Agua beach and great for surfers.
Guacuco Beach is the longest stretch of beach on the eastern peninsula and is a safe place for swimming.
Caribe Beach is a short drive from Juangriego and has many restaurants.
Puerto Cruz beache has powdery white sand dunes, the water here can be treacherous for inexperienced swimmers but the surf is great.
What to Buy
Leather goods, pottery and cotton hammocks are popular. Daily flea market is a good place to visit out of town to the west.
