Main Towns
Rhodes
The Old Town is dominated by the Palace of the Grand Masters surrounded by moats and walls. Eleven gates give access to the Old Town , which is divided into the Collachium which was the Knights quarters and the Bourg which housed the rest of the population. The Old Town is a World Heritage Site. There are plenty of things to see and lots of shopping and restaurants within the walls.
The New Town is made up of a number areas including the Nea Agora and Mandraki harbour. There is everthing from pizzerias to Gucci shops with lively streets and a beach.
Lindos
Lindos is a magnet for tourists with its white houses and the Acropolis. Don't forger to vist St Paul 's Bay and the Tomb of Kleoboulos. Lindos is a National Historic Landmark.
Faliraki
The Islands most popular resort, sandy beaches, and plenty to do in the daytime like bungee jumping and the waterpark as well as a variety of watersports. There are bars, discos and numerous restaurants and a lively nightlife.

Beaches

  • The west coast of Rhodes is subject to shore winds and can be rough, but is a windsurfer's paradise.
The east coast is more sheltered with moderate winds. In this part you will find the best beaches of the island. Kalithea with its marvelous landscape attracts the younger people. Faliraki beach slopes gently (which is perfect for children) and virtually every water sport is available. A small bay at the extreme southern end of Faliraki is popular with nudists although, strictly speaking, nudism is illegal but tollerated. Afandou is a fabulous long pebbly beach, busy at weekends, but deserted at the start/end of season. Tsambika, is for many the preferred beach with its long sandy coast. A long, deserted beach runs from Haraki and Vlicha Bay .
From Pefkos starts an almost uninterrupted beach with fabulous spots like Glistra, Kiotari, Gennadi, Plimiri and finally Prassonissi at the extreme southwest end of the island.
Scuba diving is a popular activity on Rhodes - although it is strictly prohibited unless accompanied by a recognized diving school - and only in designated areas. This is due to the abundance of antiquities in the waters around the island. You must not remove anything from the sea bed. The authorities are extremely sensitive about this and prison sentences are routinely handed out for infringements. Snorkeling is permitted anywhere.

What to Buy

Rhodes Old Town is good for the more traditional goods and the New Town for the designer gear. Oh were to start. Leather shoes are a real bargain on Rhodes and I can recommend the Greek Sandals, mine are in their fourth year. Gold is another good buy, though make sure you get a reciept for it. Greek handicrafts and folk art, traditional pottery, hand-carved wood, beaten-metal, embroidery, weaving and knitting. In addition there are more than 150 modern outlets , including well known designers such as Versace, Valentino, Escada, Luis Ferraud, Lacoste, Pierre Cardin, YSL, Emporio, Stefanel, Benetton, to name just a few!
